CAPE produces a rotating annual programme of discussion sessions and a large scale biennial exhibition that explores the multi-layered diversity and complexity of a contemporary Africa based on roots and routes: of home and belonging, exile, Diaspora and creolisation.
Our five key products encompass an integrated cyclical programme:
1. Exhibitions: A biennial exhibition inspired by large-scale exhibitions around the world (such as The Venice Biennale and Dak'art) but specifically designed to address the needs of the South African and African context.
2. Young Curator's Programme: a focused 18-month programme geared towards nurturing curatorial talent by providing an exciting environment for both critical and practical engagement.
3. Sessions: a series of debates, lectures and workshops that function as a research tool.
4. Publications: regular, accessible and affordable art publications based on CAPE's research and exhibitions and specifically designed to reach as wide an audience as possible.
5. Arts Awareness & Education Programme: a tuition-free education initiative that specifically targets the youth. It comprises:
a) Young Independents: a platform for study, exchange, networking, artistic production and inter-disciplinary collaboration between tertiary students & emerging creatives.
b) Schools: A primary & senior secondary arts awareness programme aimed at historically disadvantaged schools with little or no arts education.
Our programmes underpin our strategy of continuously developing new audiences, coupled to the transfer of skills and an appreciation of the role of arts and culture in forging a strong sense of a creative identity firmly rooted in Africa.
