An exciting new opportunity for aspiring & emerging curators
In the last decade the South African visual arts field has flourished, with artists receiving increased support and attention both locally and internationally. Despite this recognition, the visual arts are still lagging in some areas. There are, for instance, still no formal academic curatorial programmes within the country. This is resulting in a growing skills gap and slowed transformation in the sector as many aspiring curators leave to pursue their training and careers abroad.
In response, the Cape Africa Platform is launching a new Young Curator's Programme geared at nurturing local curatorial talent by providing an exciting environment for both critical and practical engagement.
The programme, which commences in 2008, targets 4-6 aspiring or emerging curators residing in South Africa. The successful applicants will undergo an all-expenses covered, focused 18-month course aimed at developing their skills in the thoughtful presentation and criticism of contemporary cultural production. They will also gain extensive practical experience in all aspects of curating and mounting exhibitions.
Seminars in art history, critical theory and discourse, presented by curators, critics and other arts professionals will run alongside independent research, exhibition and writing projects for the duration of the programme.
Participants will also complete internships overseas and on the continent, with identified partner arts institutions or established independent curators. They will have opportunities to work with experienced curators, scholars and critics in the preparation of mini-exhibitions and publications, here and abroad.
Ultimately, the process will be intense and collaborative, with participants benefiting and learning from each other's experiences to form a dynamic new network that will be instrumental in shaping the CAPE 09 exhibition and will contribute to other existing cultural structures within the country and beyond.
